Mad? Well, substitute "Adwords" for
"ineffective email marketing" or
"hours spent on social media" or
"working on our website" or
"trying to optimise my website"
and what you find is that many, many small and micro businesses are paying much more than expert marketing advice would cost - but just wasting it. Guessing. Doing 'X' because everyone else does.
And that is mad.
